What to Expect Before, During, and After EVO-ICL Surgery
May 7, 2024
Are you bothered by moderate to severe refractive errors, such as farsightedness, nearsightedness, or astigmatism, but are not a good candidate for LASIK? If so, implantable collamer lenses may be beneficial. Read on to learn more about this treatment option and how it can help you to achieve clearer overall vision.
What is EVO-ICL?
An implantable collamer lens (ICL) is an artificial lens created to correct refractive errors such as nearsightedness and astigmatism. These lenses are a great alternative for individuals who cannot or do not wish to undergo laser procedures like LASIK. An EVO-ICL is implanted in front of the eye’s natural lens but behind the iris, and it is virtually unnoticeable.
In the past, some versions of ICL surgery called for a surgeon to perform a laser iridotomy before the ICL surgery. Your surgeon would make one or two tiny holes in your iris. This would help prevent pressure from building up when the lens is implanted into your eye. The tiny holes allow for proper drainage of aqueous fluid. Now, there’s the EVO Implantable Collamer Lens, which has a tiny hole in the middle. This hole makes laser iridotomy unnecessary, and fluids can flow naturally through it.
Benefits of EVO-ICL Surgery
EVO-ICL surgery offers many benefits, including:
- Great option for those who cannot have other forms of eye surgery.
- Allows patients to enjoy clearer vision without glasses or contact lenses.
- Minimally invasive, quick surgery.
- Quick recovery time.
- Safe and effective.
What to Expect During an EVO-ICL Procedure
During the EVO-ICL procedure, your surgeon will dilate and numb your eyes. A very small incision will be created at the base of the cornea, and the implantable lens will be placed and properly adjusted. Most patients will not require stitches due to the very small size of the incision.
This process usually takes about 10-15 minutes per eye. The Ahn Nguyen Ophthalmology team will follow up with patients regularly to ensure proper healing.
What to Expect Following EVO-ICL Surgery
Your surgeon will provide you with specific aftercare instructions. Patients should use eye drops to keep their eyes clean and prevent infection. Eyesight may improve within 24 hours and continue to improve over the next 2-3 days. An ICL is permanent but can be removed if necessary.
