What Is IPL Treatment for Dry Eyes?
Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy is a light-based treatment that targets one of the most common underlying causes of dry eye: Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD). The meibomian glands, located along your eyelid margins, produce the oily layer of your tear film that keeps tears from evaporating too quickly. When these glands become blocked or inflamed, tears evaporate faster than they should, leading to the burning, redness, and irritation associated with evaporative dry eye.
MGD is responsible for the vast majority of dry eye cases, yet it is often underdiagnosed and undertreated with drops alone. IPL therapy addresses inflammation at the source rather than simply treating symptoms.
What Is OptiLIGHT by Lumenis?
OptiLIGHT is an advanced IPL device that uses precise, controlled pulses of broad-spectrum light to reduce inflammation around the eyes and improve the function of the meibomian glands. It is the first IPL device to receive FDA clearance specifically for the improvement of signs of dry eye disease due to MGD, backed by multi-center, randomized, controlled clinical trials.

How Does OptiLIGHT Work?
During treatment, gentle pulses of light are applied to the skin beneath your eyes and along your cheekbones. This light:

What to Expect During Treatment
Before your treatment, you will be given protective eyewear, and a cooling gel will be applied to the treatment area. Your provider will then use the OptiLIGHT device to deliver a series of light pulses along your lower eyelids and cheeks. Most patients describe the sensation as a warm snap, similar to a rubber band, and treatment is generally well tolerated without the need for anesthesia.
Following treatment, your provider may perform meibomian gland expression to help clear the glands and enhance results. You can typically resume your normal activities immediately after your appointment.
Recovery and Results
There is no downtime associated with IPL treatment. Some patients notice mild, temporary redness or warmth in the treated area that resolves within a few hours. Many patients begin to notice improvement in their symptoms after the first or second session, with continued improvement throughout the full treatment series.
Because dry eye disease is a chronic condition, maintenance sessions are often recommended to sustain results over time.
