While many ophthalmic surgeries such as cataract surgery were once primarily hospital-based, the tides are changing in the medical space. Now, many providers have made a shift to office-based surgery (OBS). Anh Nguyen Ophthalmology is proud to be a leader in offering OBS in the Falls Church area, offering patients an alternative to hospital-based procedures.

What is Office-Based Surgery?

Office-based surgery is a surgical procedure that is performed by a licensed physician in a doctor’s office rather than an ambulatory surgical center (ASC) or hospital. At Anh Nguyen Ophthalmology, we have our own fully outfitted OBS suite that meets or exceeds surgical safety standards and is accredited by the same national organizations as an ASC or hospital. Our surgical suite is customized specifically for ophthalmic procedures to allow our surgeons the best atmosphere to provide patients with the best possible outcomes. Offering routine eye care appointments and surgery services in one office allows us to provide a more personalized treatment approach.

What are the Benefits of Office-Based Surgery?

There is an array of benefits associated with office-based surgery, including:

  • Enhanced comfort and reduced stress in a clinical setting.
  • No fasting or IV anesthesia.
  • No additional pre-op physicals.
  • Convenience of avoiding hospital visits.
  • Personalized care with a staff that you have already had the opportunity to meet.
  • Shorter overall surgery time.

Common Procedures Performed with Office-Based Surgery

A variety of ophthalmic procedures are common in office-based surgery. These include the following.

Cataract surgery: Cataract surgery is performed to break up cataracts and remove the clouded lens from the eye, replacing it with an intraocular lens implant (IOL).

Pterygium removal: A pterygium that affects vision will need to be surgically removed. This is typically a short procedure, about 30 minutes.

Eyelid surgeries:  There are various types of eyelid surgeries that can be performed in-office. These include ptosis surgery, blepharoplasty, chalazion removal, lesion excision, and more

Keratoconus treatment: Corneal cross-linking (CXL) is an in-office procedure performed to strengthen the cornea for patients with keratoconus.
