It is natural for your eyes to develop cataracts as you age. Cataracts are a condition where the lens of your eye becomes clouded, which causes your vision to become worse. Thankfully, cataract surgery is a great treatment option for those who want to have their cataracts removed. First, you will need a qualified eye doctor to take a look at your eyes to determine if you are a good candidate for cataract surgery. Once you have been evaluated, and if your doctor recommends it, you will follow the simple steps below in preparation for surgery.

The Month Before Surgery

Within one month before your cataract surgery, your eye doctor will want you to come in to have several tests done. These tests will help the doctor determine which exact procedure would be the best for you and what replacement lens to use. A qualified member of your eye doctor’s staff will also go over detailed instructions for the time leading up to and after surgery.

The Night Before Surgery

You will want to be sure that you tell your eye doctor about any medications that you are taking before the surgery. Do not eat or drink anything after 12 midnight prior to your surgery day, because this could lead to a delay of your surgery. Try to get a good night’s sleep before the surgery so that you are well-rested. Your eye doctor will give you any further instructions on what to do the night before surgery.

The Day of Surgery

If there are any medications you cannot delay taking on surgery day, you should take them with a small amount of water. You will not be able to eat or drink anything else before your cataract surgery. You should arrive at the surgery center 2 hours before your scheduled surgery time with someone who will stay with you and drive you home. You will want to make sure that you do not wear makeup, perfume, or cologne when you go into the surgery center. You will also want to make sure that you wear comfortable clothing during the procedure.

You will be asked to use eye drops prior to the surgery, so make sure that you have them and use them according to the doctor’s instructions. You can expect to be in and out of the office within 2 hours.
