At Anh Nguyen Ophthalmology, we strive to expertly diagnose and treat a wide array of eye conditions, such as cataractsglaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and much more. If you are looking for an ophthalmology practice that fits the needs of you and your family, Anh Nguyen Ophthalmology is here for you.

Common Eye Conditions

Your eyes are resilient but are still susceptible to many different conditions. Here at Anh Nguyen Ophthalmology, we treat some of the most common (and not-so-common) conditions, such as:

Myopia & Hyperopia

Also known as nearsightedness and farsightedness, respectively. These two eye conditions are among the most common in the world. Most people have one of these conditions. These common refractive errors have many different correction options such as glasses, contact lenses, LASIK, implantable contact lenses, refractive lens exchange, and more.

Astigmatism

Astigmatism is another common refractive error that is often combined with myopia or hyperopia. Astigmatism causes your cornea to be irregular in shape. Astigmatism is treated through LASIK and refractive lens exchange.

Presbyopia

Often referred to as “vision after 40,”, presbyopia is an age-related refractive error. Presbyopia causes blurry near vision, making it nearly impossible to read without glasses.

Keratoconus

People with keratoconus have a cone-shaped cornea, as opposed to the normal dome-shaped cornea. This causes extremely blurry vision and can be hard to treat in its later stages. Keratoconus can be treated through corneal crosslinking, Intacs, scleral contact lenses, or corneal transplant.

Dry Eye Syndrome

Dry eyes are extremely common, especially as you reach middle age. They can be caused by a multitude of factors such as hormone changes, environment, and lifestyle. Dry eye can be treated with eye drops, punctal plugs, supplements, and/or a procedure called LipiFlow.

Cataracts

Cataracts are one of the most common eye conditions in the world. With age, the proteins that make up the natural lens begin to break down and clump together. As these proteins clump together, they begin to obscure the lens, causing it to become foggy. Cataracts are only treatable through surgery. Millions of people undergo cataract surgery each year, and it is considered a safe and routine procedure.

Glaucoma

Another incredibly common condition, glaucoma, is known for causing irreparable damage to the optic nerve. Glaucoma does not show symptoms until permanent vision loss occurs, making it very important to attend routine eye exams. Glaucoma is treatable through eye drops, Laser surgery, and MIIGS (minimally invasive glaucoma stents).

Pterygium

Pterygium is a fleshy growth that occurs on the cornea. It can become irritated and obstruct vision as it grows over a period of years. This can be removed with a simple surgical procedure.

Chalazion

A chalazion is a slow-growing, inflammatory lump that grows in Meibomian of the eyelid. These are not usually painful, and most go away on their own with a little bit of care. However, some will need to be removed by an eye doctor.

Diabetic Retinopathy

Uncontrolled diabetes can wreak havoc on the eyes. Diabetic retinopathy occurs when the tiny blood vessels on the retina begin to leak blood and fluid. This can obstruct vision and lead to other issues. Diabetic retinopathy can be treated with LASER, intraocular injections, brands like Avastin and Ozurdex, surgery, and lifestyle changes.

Flashes and Floaters

Generally harmless, flashes and floatersare mostly an annoyance. Floaters appear as specks in the eye varying from tiny to large in some cases. Flashes appear in vision as quick flashes of light, similar to lightning. While they are not harmful themselves, they can be a symptom of a much bigger issue: retinal detachment. Most floaters and flashes do not require treatment.

Macular Degeneration

The macula, the small patch of tissue in the middle of the retina, can slowly start to deteriorate as you age. This is called macular degeneration. The most common type of macular degeneration does not usually require treatment. The more advanced type can be treated through laser surgery, medications, and special devices.

If you’re experiencing one of these issues, contact Anh Nguyen Ophthalmology to discuss possible treatments.
