Retina Surgery

What is the Retina?

The retina is the light-sensitive tissue located at the back interior of the eye. This tissue is made up of millions of photoreceptive cells. The retina is responsible for receiving light from the cornea, translating the light into brain signals, and sending them through the optic nerve to your brain.

The retina is extremely important, and an unhealthy retina often results in permanent vision loss. The retina is susceptible to many different diseases, especially with age. Keeping your retina healthy involves regular eye examinations and a healthy lifestyle. However, not all conditions can be avoided. Here at Anh Nguyen Ophthalmology, we offer top-notch retinal disease diagnosis and treatment.

Common Retinal Conditions

There are many conditions and diseases that can affect the retina – some common, and some not so common.

Retinal diseases treated here at Anh Nguyen Ophthalmology include:

  • Macular degeneration
  • Diabetic retinopathy
  • Retinal detachment
  • Macular pucker
  • Floaters

Common Retinal Surgeries

The retina is a delicate tissue, and surgery can be complicated. However, a skilled and highly trained retinal surgeon will be able to navigate the area safely and effectively. Here at Anh Nguyen Ophthalmology, we pride ourselves on offering the best retinal services in the area.

We offer our patients the following treatments:

  • Laser surgery: Laser surgery can be performed to fix retinal tears. Your surgeon will make small burns on the retina in order to close and seal the tissue. If left untreated, a retinal tear can cause retinal detachment.
  • Freezing treatment (cryopexy): Cryopexy is another common procedure used to repair tears on the retina. Your surgeon will freeze parts of the retina, resulting in scar tissue that will keep your retina in place.
  • Scleral buckle: This is a common treatment for retinal detachments. The scleral buckle literally “buckles” your retina in place. The retina will be able to resettle into its normal position.
  • Vitrectomy: During a vitrectomy, your surgeon will remove parts of the vitreous humor from the middle of your eye. The bits that are removed usually contain fluid or blood that has leaked from the retina, obscuring vision.
