What is LASIK?

What is LASIK? LASIK stands for Laser-Assisted-In-Situ Keratomileusis. LASIK is an elective out-patient procedure. LASIK eye surgery is one of the most frequently performed elective procedures in the United States. The procedure is done in an operating room at a medical office. The actual procedure takes about less than 20 minutes from the time you lay down on the laser bed to the time you sit up.

LASIK uses a cool beam laser to reshape the front surface of your eye, also known as the cornea. The laser will reshape the cornea differently depending on if a patient is myopic (nearsighted) or hyperopic (farsighted). In patients who are nearsighted, the laser will flatten the cornea centrally depending on the amount of correction the patient needs. If a patient is farsighted, the laser will steepen the cornea by applying the laser beam to the outer part of the cornea. For patients with greater than a 5.00 diopter of correction, more microns are removed from the cornea. For patients with small amount of correction, less microns are removed. Microns is Equal 0.000001 meters. To put this into perspective for you, a single strand of hair is about 40 microns. LASIK treatments can range from ten microns up to hundreds of microns.

It is estimated that the prevalence of myopia is about 25.4 percent (30.4 million people) in the United States and 4.5 percent of whom (5.3 million people) had more severe forms of myopia. Moderate hyperopia to severe hyperopia is approximated to be about 9.9 percent (11.8 million people) in the United States.

The recovery time for LASIK is fairly quick. Most patients are able to go back to work the next day. LASIK is a process that requires the patient to understand that the visual outcome will take some time for recovery. After the procedure, LASIK patients are able to see better than they did without their glasses but the vision will look like oil smeared on glasses due to the eye drops that were instilled on the eye after the treatment.
