LASIK Technology 101

  1. VISX Traditional
  2. VISX Custom
  3. INTRALASE® FS Laser (Bladeless Technology)

LASIK Technology 101VISX TRADITIONAL:

The actual LASIK procedure is performed the same way with the flap making and the cool beam laser reshaping the cornea. Conventional LASIK or Traditional LASIK has been around for many years and has been a complete revolution in refractive surgery. Conventional LASIK is still an excellent choice for many patients depending on corneal scans done at the office. Your doctor will recommend the best procedure based on your visual aberration and visual needs. Your surgeon will help you make the best choice for you.

VISX CUSTOM:

VISX Custom is a type of procedure that will allow for a more customized treatment for you. Like a fingerprint, your eyes are unique and no one person can have the same eye as you. VISX Custom treatment allows the laser to treat your eyes based on a series of eye scans done with a Wavescan. WaveScan technology was originally developed for use in high-powered telescopes to reduce distortions when viewing distant objects in space. This technology has now been applied to laser vision correction, measuring imperfections such as lower and higher aberrations that exist within the eys and can affect your vision. Each patient has a different amount of aberration in each eye. This type of technology identifies and measures imperfections in your eyes 25 times more precisely than standard methods. The images are then translated into a set of CustomVue treatment instructions for the laser. Previously, only lower-order aberrations (such as nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism) could be measured and treated. Higher-order aberrations may also have a significant impact on vision and have been linked to glare and halos. The new technological advances, Custom LASIK may help to further customize your treatment of these higher-order aberrations that could not be corrected with glasses, contacts or conventional LASIK treatments years ago.

The Technology of Custom LASIKThe Technology of Custom LASIK

Custom LASIK uses a wavefront analyzer to measure the way light travels through your eye. The wavefront analyzer creates a customized 3-D map of your eye that looks at your entire optical system. This map provides information about the unique visual characteristics of your eye which adds an additional level of data about your vision, enabling your surgeon to further customize your vision correction.
  • The WaveScan Wavefront System provides:
    • Fourier-based wavefront algorithms:
    • Fourier delivers the highest resolution available of the wavefront error
    • Uses more data points to derive the optimal shape
    • Uses all data from any shape of pupil
    • Accurately reconstructs all peripheral data
    • Captures and treats higher and lower order aberrations up to 7 mm diameter pupil
In clinical studies, Custom LASIK has been able to provide patients with:
  • A greater chance of having 20/20 vision
  • The potential for better vision than is possible with contacts or glasses
  • Less incidence of glare and halos
  • Potentially better overall vision, even at night.
